In 2013 Magnus Carlsen edged Vladimir Kramnik on tie-break in the candidates to qualify for a match with Anand. That match was less close as Carlsen won with an undefeated 6.5-3.5 to take the title.

Vishy Anand impressively won the candidates tournament immediately after losing his title and earned another shot. Carlsen won decisively a second time 6.5-4.5.
