Simen Agdestein is a Norwegian grandmaster, author, coach, and nine-time Norwegian champion. He was also a professional soccer player who made it to the Norwegian national team as a striker.

Agdestein won his first Norwegian championship in 1982, a year before earning his international master title. He won the title again in 1986, 1988, 1989, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2022, and 2023. At 55 and 56 years old for the last two, he broke the record for the oldest player to ever win the national Norwegian title.

Agdestein also won the 2003 Isle of Man tournament and represented his country in the Olympics seven times. Agdestein is also an accomplished chess coach, with world champion GM Magnus Carlsen being one of his former students.
