Bio

Luke McShane is an English grandmaster and finance professional. He is often referred to as the "world's strongest amateur player" because he plays at elite chess tournaments although he has a full-time job. McShane has beaten some of the best players in the world, including GMs Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik. He won silver at the European Blitz Championship and took individual gold for board two of the 2019 World Team Championship (winning silver for England).

McShane had an illustrious career as a young player. He won the World U10 Championship at the age of eight and became the youngest GM (age 16) and IM (age 13) in British history. In January 2004, he was the second-ranked junior in the world behind GM Teimour Radjabov.
