World Youth U16 Starts Tomorrow

A record-breaking World Youth U16 will take off on Saturday in Győr, Hungary. Teams from at least 40 countries will participate.

After she announced her retirement in August, Judit Polgar hasn't been sitting still. First there was the Polgar Chess Festival, and right after she has been involved in preparing the World Youth Under 16 Championship, which will be organized for the first time in Hungary.

The World Youth U16 will be held December 12-22 in Győr, in northwest Hungary, located halfway between Budapest and Vienna. With at least 40 countries being represented, it will be the largest edition ever.

Like the Olympiad, the World Youth U16 is a team event, with 10 rounds being scheduled. Each team consists of four players and one reserve player, and at least one of the players must be a girl. The players must be younger than 16 by January 1, 2014.

The full list on Chess-Results has 54 teams at the time of writing, with India, Germany, Russia, Ukraine and host country Hungary being the favorites. The strongest individual players are:
