Background

As a kid I learned how to play chess, more than 30 years ago. At that time (elementary school) I only needed one opening (Italian). All games were tactical skirmishes that didn't require much positional understanding. Fun times.  In the decades after that I hardly played any chess. Even in my more active years, I played no more than a dozen casual games a year.

I’ve always considered myself to be perfectly placed on the dividing line between casual and active players. Roughly speaking I could beat any casual player I’d meet, but against active (club) chess players I lost almost every game.

It was the Netflix show the Queen's Gambit that brought me back into the game. I really enjoy playing chess again and working on my game. It's astonishing how much progress there has been in the world of chess. I appreciate all the digital content that's available and I absolutely love all the fancy engine stuff.

Reviews

What are people saying about Duckfest? Here is a selection of reviews:

“Dude. You're reading my mind better than I am. Yes, that's exactly what I'm doing without ever articulating it as such. And really terrific advice. Thanks”.
“Black (Duckfest) doesn't have an idea for what he's supposed to be doing. Just making random moves here and there. He gains some momentum on the kingside and runs with it”.
“Very inspiring Duckfest, I love your passion and vulnerability to share your thoughts, hopes and struggles”.
“yours is a simplistic, superficial and indifferent way of analyzing reality ...and in your opinion, those who think differently from you are a conspiracy theorist, a madman a paranoid”.
Wow. I just read Duckfest's post in response to your concern and it's fantastic. If you follow what Duckfest said you will see significant improvement. But it does take time.
“Duckfest, thanks for discouraging new players. You seem like a gatekeeping douche”.
